When it comes to connected fitness tech for endurance athletes, few brands have grown as quickly, and as influentially, as Wahoo Fitness. What began as a cyclist’s solution to frustration has evolved into one of the most trusted names in the sport, shaping how athletes train, analyze performance, and connect hardware and software into one cohesive ecosystem.

A Humble Beginning with a Big Idea

Wahoo Fitness was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2009 by mechanical engineer and endurance enthusiast Chip Hawkins. The spark for the company came from a simple but pervasive problem: early GPS cycling computers and sensors didn’t communicate seamlessly with mobile devices. Hawkins set out to fix that and ended up creating an entire connected-fitness ecosystem that would change training for cyclists, triathletes, runners, and multisport athletes around the globe.

The company started with small, clever products (like an ANT+ dongle that allowed sensor data to be displayed on an iPhone), but its vision always looked much larger: making performance data usable, accessible, and actionable for the everyday athlete.

What Wahoo Makes: Hardware + Software That Works Together

Over the past decade-plus, Wahoo has steadily built a product lineup that covers most of an athlete’s training needs — whether that’s tracking speed and power outdoors, training indoors, tracking heart rate, or planning workouts.

Here’s a look at the core categories:

1. Smart Indoor Trainers — The KICKR Family

The Wahoo KICKR series has become one of the most recognizable smart trainer lines on the planet. These indoor bike trainers connect to phones, tablets, and apps to simulate real-world rides, adjust resistance automatically, and provide accurate power metrics. In recent years Wahoo expanded this category with smart bikes and treadmills, pushing the brand deeper into indoor training innovation.

2. GPS Computers and Sport Watches — ELEMNT Series

Wahoo’s ELEMNT computers and watches bring sophisticated navigation and performance tracking to your handlebars and wrist. Known for intuitive user interfaces, strong battery life, and tight integration with apps, these devices are serious tools for data-driven riders. Unfortunately, the Wahoo watch has been discontinued and is no longer available through Wahoo. However, Wahoo will still service the watch, if you've got one!

3. Heart Rate Monitors — TICKR Family

The TICKR sensors deliver dual-band heart rate data and calorie tracking, syncing to phones, watches, and training apps. They’re lightweight, reliable, and a key piece of the connected athlete puzzle.

4. Sensors and Accessories

Whether it’s speed and cadence sensors or other performance monitors, Wahoo’s suite of accessories helps athletes gather rich data sets to gauge performance across disciplines. Some of their accessories include items like their rubber floor mats, Wahoo clipless pedals (formerly known as Speedplay), and fans for keeping you cool while training indoors.

5. Training and Virtual Platforms — Wahoo SYSTM, RGT, and Wahoo X

To bring hardware and workouts closer together, Wahoo acquired the training platform The Sufferfest (now Wahoo SYSTM) and the virtual cycling platform RGT Cycling. These have now been integrated into Wahoo X, a subscription service that offers structured workouts, immersive virtual riding, and personalized training plans, all tied back to Wahoo devices.

Together, this hardware + software ecosystem allows athletes to train smarter, track deeply, and stay connected across tools.

Global Reach and Company Growth

From its headquarters in Atlanta, Wahoo now serves athletes in over 130 countries with offices and operations around the world. The company has weathered growth phases and investment cycles — including private equity investments and a founder-led buyback — all while expanding its product reach and software depth.

Product Quality and Community Reputation

Wahoo’s products have earned enthusiastic support from many athletes for their performance, data accuracy, and integrations with third-party apps like Strava and TrainerRoad. Athletes often praise Wahoo’s simplicity and the ecosystem’s ability to make training feel less fragmented.

That said, like any tech brand with a passionate user base, Wahoo also sees mixed feedback around customer service experiences and occasional product issues — especially as the product lineup has expanded and production scaled.

Aligning with Wahoo: Our Partnership

One of the parts of Wahoo’s story that really resonates with us at Project Blue – Health Optimization is their commitment to helping athletes train with data, insight, and purpose. As business partners, we’re excited to offer a curated selection of Wahoo products to our community — from smart trainers to GPS computers — because they complement the physiological testing and performance analytics we provide. Whether an athlete is using a Wahoo trainer to execute structured workouts or an ELEMNT computer to monitor training load, the hardware becomes part of the athlete’s performance story. We can now sell these products and stand behind their integration into smart training regimes.

Beyond gear, our partnership reflects a shared goal: help athletes understand and optimize performance — with quality tech and expert interpretation working hand-in-hand.

The Future: Innovation and Integration

Wahoo isn’t standing still. They continue to innovate with new products (like evolving smart bikes and treadmills) and deeper software integrations — all aimed at helping athletes train smarter at every level. Whether you’re chasing your personal best, training through injury, or just wanting a more enjoyable indoor session, Wahoo’s ecosystem can support that journey.
